King 3rd At Farley Half-Mile

Rich King finished third at round ten of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship on the Farley Speedway half-mile.
August 9, 2005

Farley, IA - Running in front of his home-state fans, Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts rider Rich King finished third at round ten of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship on the Farley Speedway half-mile near Farley, Iowa. Mid-America Harley-Davidson rider Ken Coolbeth led 21 laps to take his second win of the season.

“It was good to have a race in Iowa, with lots of friends and family around,” said King. “We’re rolling pretty good right now and having fun. It’s exciting to move up in the points race, and we’re looking forward to doing well in the upcoming races at tracks like Peoria and Springfield where the team has had success in the past.”

King won his heat race and then opened the 25-lap main in fourth position, as Latus Harley-Davidson/Jones Powersports rider Joe Kopp took the lead. Coolbeth moved past Kopp on lap four and was never challenged on his way to the win. King passed Lima Harley-Davidson/Ideal Environment rider Bryan Bigelow for third place on lap 10, and then engaged in a fierce battle with Kopp, with King passing Kopp for second place on lap 20. Coming up from a sixth-place start was Quality Checked Pre-Owned Ford/Lancaster Harley-Davidson rider Chris Carr, who managed to pass both King and Kopp to take over second place on lap 23 and grab some critical points in the season championship race. King held on for third and Kopp was fourth. Bigelow finished fifth, with Saddleman/Lancaster Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees in sixth place. All 18 riders qualified for the main were riding Harley-Davidson XR750 motorcycles.

With his win at Farley and five straight podium results, Coolbeth is just five points behind Carr in the AMA Flat Track Championship points race. Carr, the reigning Grand National champ, has 171 points to 166 for Coolbeth. Kopp is third with 144 points, followed by Mees with 129, and King is in fifth place with 105 points. Six races still remain on the 2005 schedule.

“Rich and the Screamin’ Eagle team have worked hard all season, and we’re glad they’re doing so well and nabbed another podium finish this weekend,” said Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso. “The team is working really well together, and we’re excited to compete in the next few races.”

Also at Farley, Harv’s Harley-Davidson rider Chris Hart won round five of the 2005 Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance National series. Lima Harley-Davidson rider Scott Stump was second, followed by F&S Harley-Davidson rider Ricky Marshall and Doc’s Harley-Davidson rider Merle Scherb. The win allowed Hart to gain on Stump in the season standings. Stump leads the series with 111 points. Harts lurks just five points back in second with 106 points, and Scherb in third with 98 points. Marshall moves into fourth with 85 points.

Round 11 of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship series is scheduled for August 21 at Peoria Race Park in Peoria, Ill.
